Links of the Week

  1. Do your church start with the why? This is a great question to wrestle with for pastors.
  2. Justin Holcomb on Sex-trafficking at the super bowl. According to stats, the super bowl is the largest sex-trafficking event in the U.S.
  3. Churches to watch in 2012.
  4. Bob Franquiz on 5 factors you need to double this Easter.
  5. The goal of a leader.

  8. Perry Noble on You should probably not date him if. This is great advice for single women.
  9. How much is a homemaker worth?

Jacob’s Story

Jacob’s Story is a mini-documentary about a man that once made his living by trafficking women & children for the purposes of commercial sex.

Jacob worked as a trafficker for a crime syndicate in Johannesburg South Africa. We decided to release his story because of how raw it is. In this film, he speaks openly about his work as a brothel manager and he explains how syndicates all over the world operate as they exploit the weak and powerless. Most importantly, you’ll hear about the life transformation that’s taken place in Jacob’s life.

From trafficker to rescuer. Only in the Kingdom of God.

Jacob is living proof that when the Gospel changes the hearts of men; everything changes.

Links of the Week

  1. Michael Hyatt on How to shave 10 hours off your week. Such helpful stuff, I can attest that these do shave time off your week.
  2. Ron Edmondson on 7 suggestions for a pastor or pastor’s wife to find true friends. Great tips here as this is incredibly difficult.
  3. Relevant magazine on The friends with benefits epidemic. This will be one of topics we cover in week 3 of The Vow
  4. How pornography and our culture’s view of sex has perpetuated sex trafficking. This is a fascinating article if you are a man, father, wife or raise a boy. Wow.
  5. What churches can learn from Starbucks.
  6. Trevin Wax on The book Erasing Hell. Sad that a book like this needs to be written to defend what Scriptures say about heaven, hell and eternity. But it is a helpful book on the topic.

Links of the Week

  1. The Role of Vision Casting in Preaching. I was talking with D.J. about this the other day. Very few pastors understand the power they have when they preach in terms of leadership and vision casting. Their preaching sets the tone for the church.
  2. “Sexual Detox” is now available. This is a great little book on porn, sexuality from a man’s perspective. If you are struggling with porn, this is definitely worth picking up.
  3. Collide Magazine on Who do you create for. This is a great question that many worship leaders and pastors never ask, let alone answer. If you don’t know who will be in your audience this weekend, how do you know who you are speaking to, what their needs are and what and how you will need to communicate.
  4. Justin Holcomb on 12 ways to make your teaching and writing anti-Christian. Sadly many pastors and churches these.
  5. C.J. Mahaney on The humbling power of cross-centered thinking.
  6. Al Mohler on Christianity and Yoga. This was a really helpful and thorough article. I practice yoga, but don’t meditate or pray or look for energy when I do it, for me it is about stretching and staying limber as I grow older. According to Mohler, “I don’t do yoga, I do stretching.” It is a helpful distinction and I think Christians need to be aware of where yoga came from and what it is really all about and be careful, but I also don’t think that it is wrong for a Christian to practice yoga.
  7. Steven Furticks book Sun Stand Still is only $6.99 on amazon. This was one of the best books I read all year and easily one of the best on the topics of faith and prayer. If you want a book to challenge to have big faith, pray big prayers and believe in a big God, this is the book.
  8. I’m hoping that Apple will block the new iPhone “pimp” app. Read more about it here and how to tell Apple to block it. This would be disastrous for the fight against sex trafficking if they allowed this app to be put on the iPhone.
  9. Ben Roethlisberger is back at practice. This makes me so happy.
  10. Men’s Health 20 Best Weight loss tips. Many of these have helped me over the last 2 years lose over 100 pounds.

Saturday Night Mind Dump…

  • Tonight was one of those nights
  • My whole head and body ached because of my allergies
  • I thought that I might pass out a few times while I was preaching
  • Yet
  • God did unbelievable things tonight
  • Love how that happens
  • The week after Easter is always nerve wracking for a pastor
  • But I am blown away every week by how God is moving at Revolution
  • God keeps sending us people, people keep bringing people
  • I love the passion of our church to fulfill the mission God has called us to
  • Tonight was a reminder for me as to why I love preaching through books of the Bible
  • I preached on prayer and how we are to pray
  • I would never have chosen Nehemiah 9 to make that point, but there is so much in that passage
  • Love how God’s word is alive, how it enters our lives and speaks to us
  • If you missed tonight, you can listen to it here
  • Had a Revolutionary tell me this week that one of his friends accepted Jesus on Saturday. He said it was the first time he was part of affecting someone’s eternity.
  • How cool is that?
  • Katie and I started an adoption blog so that you can stay updated on what is happening and how to pray for us in the process
  • If you are interested in following along check out
  • Right now I’m reading Church 3.0 (when I told Katie she asked if I read 1.0 and 2.0, not funny I told her)
  • Anyway, it is definitely interesting
  • It is about what existing churches can learn from the house church movement
  • While it is interesting and causing me to think, it is also making me mad when the author creates straw man arguments to show how house churches are right and everything else isn’t Biblical
  • Which is false because you have to throw out a lot of the New Testament and say it isn’t accurate to be able to do that
  • For example, he says that preaching and leadership are not for churches today, doesn’t have any passages in the Bible to back up his point, but he also doesn’t talk about the passages that would say he is wrong
  • Ironically, lots of people do that to make the Bible say what they want it to
  • But I’ll wait for my review to share it all
  • I want to give it a fair shake before I go off about it
  • One of my mentors told me that is what makes a good leader, “they can loving disagree with someone in a Starbucks and still learn from them”
  • Katie and I celebrated 8 years this past week
  • I am still blown away that she said yes to marrying me
  • Here are some pictures from our big day last week, in case you missed it
  • We rolled The City out to our church tonight, if you didn’t get to sign up at church, you can do so here
  • I’m excited to see how this helps to connect our church in a greater way
  • If you have any questions about it, feel free to contact Christe LePeau
  • One of the blogs I follow, Anne Jackson, is in Russia raising awareness about sex trafficking
  • She is writing some horrifying stuff, crazy that this happens in our world
  • Check out her posts here (these are definitely worth reading)
  • I have my coaching network this week
  • Always get a lot out of this time with other leaders
  • We have our next baby/child dedication next Saturday
  • If you are interested in participating, email Jennifer Ingram
  • We also have our next newcomer’s brunch next Sunday
  • So much happening right now
  • If you are new to Revolution and want to spend some time with our leaders, ask them questions and hear about where we are heading as a church and what makes us tick, send an email to Christe LePeau telling her that you would like to sign up
  • I’m starting to work on the series coming up after Nehemiah
  • It’s called The Perfect Kid
  • We’ll look not only at parenting and family, but also what it means to be a child of God
  • I think it is going to be awesome
  • Next week I’m talking about how change happens and how God changes people
  • If you have ever felt like you are stuck, it will be a night worth checking out
  • I am blown away by how God is moving at Revolution right now and growing our church
  • Revolutionaries, this does not happen everywhere and it is not something we have done
  • We are just being faithful and following God
  • Let’s keep it up
