Monday Morning Mind Dump… [Late Edition]

mind dump

  • It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve posted my mind dump.
  • A lot has happened in that time.
  • Hence, the late edition.
  • We spent one week on vacation in San Diego and last week Katie and I were in Florida for the Acts 29 pastor’s retreat.
  • While it was nice traveling, it was nice coming home.
  • There are a ton of things happening for me right now: finishing up the rough draft of my book (which is due August 1), hiring 2 staff members at Revolution, planning our fall sermon series (Multiply on 1 Timothy and Waiting on God on Habakkuk), working behind the scenes to improve our systems of MC’s and elders as Revolution continues to grow.
  • All good and fun things.
  • I was reminded today why every pastor needs a coach after I talked with mine.
  • Having someone who can help you crystalize what you are thinking, give you pushback to improve something is so helpful for a pastor.
  • Doing the wedding of a couple in our MC this Friday.
  • Always love being a part of weddings.
  • The only problem with weddings in Tucson is everyone gets married an hour away from me on the NW side of the city.
  • The timing of the Acts 29 retreat could not have been more helpful for me.
  • This summer is all about how do we continue to grow as a church and stay healthy (or get healthier in certain areas) to shepherd and care for everyone God sends us.
  • Honestly, this is the most excited I have ever been about Revolution.
  • It is also causing me to dive deeper and deeper into prayer which is a good thing.
  • In some ways I feel like I did when we planted the church almost 6 years ago.

If you haven’t signed up to receive my latest blog post every morning in your inbox, you can do so here. I’d love to help you move forward in your life and leadership.

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

  • The first day back from vacation can be brutal.
  • I’m rested, excited about being back, but blown away by how much can stack up while you’re gone.
  • It was definitely different being at church yesterday without Paul. First time in over 5 years.
  • At the same time, it felt good as so many people commented about how church felt the same. That’s a good thing.
  • Mike did a great job preaching his first sermon.
  • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  • Love seeing new communicators preach in our church and seeing their gifts develop.
  • On vacation I read one of the best books I’ve ever read on team building and hiring: It’s Not the How or the What but the Who: Succeed by Surrounding Yourself with the Best
  • So much wisdom in this book.
  • So far, my summer reading list has proven to be filled with great books.
  • Definitely came at a good time for me as we are hiring 2 new staff members at Revolution Church: A kids pastor and a pastor to lead worship and oversee missional communities.
  • I’m excited because tomorrow I’m going to be part of a google hangout you can watch on worrying, stress and church planting.
  • All the fun starts at 2pm EST.
  • You can watch here.
  • Getting closer and closer to finishing the first draft of my book.
  • Hard to believe.
  • I’ve been loving the world cup.
  • So many great games and great goals.
  • Stunned at how the US is hanging in their group.
  • This is a short one, cause I’ve got lots going on.
  • Til next time…

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

    • Yesterday was an exhausting but exciting day in the life of Revolution Church, and for Katie and I.
    • It was sad because we announced that Paul and Jennifer Ingram are moving to a church in Alabama.
    • I have worked with Paul longer than anyone else in my life and we have been through so much with their family over the past 5 years of planting together.
    • His last day will be on June 15th.
    • I always thought Paul and I would work together for decades, but 5 years is pretty incredible.
    • As I told our church yesterday, we are moving into a crucial season as a church as we grow from 300 to 500.
    • God always has a way of making things happen at the right time on his timetable.
    • This is no different.
    • I’ll be posting tomorrow about some of the details of what our transition plan looks like over the summer.
    • It’s been nice having the last 2 weeks off from preaching, but I’m excited about preaching this coming Sunday.
    • I’m talking about how to trust God when trusting God or others is hard to do.
    • Joe did a great job yesterday preaching his first sermon at our church.
    • Love seeing new communicators and leaders rise up in Revolution and get trained.
    • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
    • I spent much of last week finishing up the rough draft of my book.
    • It’s due on August 1st and I’ve been trying to work ahead of my deadline.
    • So far, so good.
    • I don’t know about anyone else, but I feel like my summer weeks are busier than my non-summer weeks.
    • How does that happen?
    • Makes me really excited for my summer preaching break coming up.
    • I’m starting a new training program today with a new trainer.
    • Excited about continuing to grow in that area of my life.
    • I’m reminded more and more how important physical health is to longevity in ministry.
    • Too many leaders and pastors don’t take this seriously enough.
    • I’m reading what might be the best church planting book ever and it not a church planting book.
    • It’s called The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers.
    • Planters, buy this book.
    • You’re welcome.
    • Time to get back to it…

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

  • Ah Monday morning.
  • Pastor, if you got some criticism this morning like I did, just let it go.
  • Excited that this weekend is Memorial Day weekend.
  • I’m off from preaching this week.
  • So excited to have my leadership coach Brian Howard in town to preach.
  • He’s one of the smartest leaders I know and if you don’t already, you should check out his blog.
  • We’re going to take a break from our Galatians series this week and he’s going to talk about reconciling relationships from the book of Philemon.
  • Speaking of Galatians, it was awesome yesterday preaching on Galatians 2 and the topic of justification by faith.
  • Such a huge topic and so crucial to Christianity.
  • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  • So awesome getting to meet so many first time guests yesterday.
  • After 2 years of working on the project, I signed my first book deal this past week.
  • So excited for the road ahead and to get the book out.
  • I started training with a fitness coach that is being hugely helpful for my mobility.
  • Of all the areas I’m weak when it comes to working out, it’s mobility.
  • If you don’t have coaches in your life to help you grow in your weaknesses, you will never reach your potential.
  • I finally finished the book What’s Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done.
  • I’ll post a review this week, but in short, if you are looking for a book on productivity, this is one of the best ones out there.
  • Christian or not.
  • Really helpful.
  • Over the next 2 months we will have some up and coming leaders in our church preaching.
  • So excited about who God has put at our church and the gifts they possess.
  • I’m also really excited about my summer preaching break.
  • It’s a blessing to me, my family and to our church in so many ways.
  • Time to get back to it…

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

  • Today should be a big day in the course of my life.
  • If all goes as planned, I will finalize a book deal today for my first book.
  • Can’t believe that a goal I’ve had for over a decade is almost here.
  • I have spent the last 2 years working on a proposal and talking to publishers to finally reach this point.
  • Not sure how tonight will feel, but I hope it isn’t anti-climatic.
  • Yesterday was a busy day at Revolution.
  • We had 5 photographers taking free family pictures before and after the service.
  • Love how many gifted artists our church has and their willingness to bless our church like that.
  • The response to the pictures is always great.
  • Yesterday was one of those sermons that did not go as I expected it to go.
  • Preachers can relate to that.
  • In one regard it went really well and I communicated everything that I wanted to, which is always good.
  • In another regard, I felt like I preached 2 different sermons.
  • After I was done, the response was overwhelming, which was unexpected because how I felt.
  • Love how God works that way.
  • Had a first time guest come up right after the service and tell me he had become a Christian during the message.
  • Never gets old hearing that.
  • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  • Read the new book Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration over the weekend.
  • So many lessons for pastors and churches in it.
  • I don’t know about you, but I spent a good portion of the weekend following the NFL draft.
  • I can’t wait for football season.
  • I may have to blog about this, but maybe not, but I am tired of people saying, “Michael Sam is just a football player.”
  • So tired of hearing that because no one is treating him like that, especially Michael Sam.
  • Finally got to watch the new episode of 24 last night.
  • So good.
  • Funny how much it looks and feels like the old 24.
  • I thought, we really waited 5 years for them to do this?
  • Still great though.
  • I don’t know about you, but I am ready for summer to get here.
  • I’m excited for what lays ahead for my summer.
  • Hope you have some great plans.
  • Time to get back to it.

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

  • This is one of those Monday’s that I feel like I am moving through the fog.
  • Last week I spoke at Exponential in Orlando, which was incredible.
  • Walked away with a lot of ideas and was challenged personally in some good ways and had a great time speaking and interacting with other leaders.
  • Then Friday I pulled off some great surprises for Katie’s birthday.
  • Her step-mom flew out from Kansas City without Katie’s knowledge and showed up at Katie’s surprise pedicure appt.
  • Then, I pulled off a surprise dinner with some friends on Friday night.
  • Then after preaching yesterday I feel run over.
  • But in a good way.
  • Revolution Church is in a good season right now.
  • I started doing something different at the end of our services that has yielded me meeting a ton of guests each week, which is exciting.
  • I met 8 first time guests yesterday.
  • Love that opportunity.
  • I spoke about figuring out God’s will yesterday and how we often miss it because of how we think of it incorrectly.
  • It was an honor to see people stand saying they were in a desert right now and being able to pray over them.
  • If you push through the desert and pull closer to Jesus in that time, it yields a heart and character that is impossible to get without going through the desert.
  • Wish I would’ve thought of that line yesterday.
  • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  • I’m excited this week for our next preaching lab.
  • This is how we seek to develop new preachers and see where guys in our church are at and how they are developing.
  • We have 3 guys doing it this week.
  • So excited and honored by the leaders God is sending to us right now.
  • One of the great things about flying across country this past week was the chance to get some reading done.
  • Got through Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of YouWhat’s Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things DoneReplant: How a Dying Church Can Grow Again and The Heart is the Target: Preaching Practical Application from Every Text.
  • Stay tuned for some reviews coming soon.
  • I have my coaching with Brian Howard today.
  • Can’t express how much I have grown as a leader and preacher through this time with him.
  • So, so helpful.
  • Just a heads up, I turn 35 tomorrow, so get your gifts ready!

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

  • I was reminded yesterday why preaching through books of the Bible is important.
  • I preached on a topic I don’t struggle with as much as other topics and one I haven’t preached a lot on, because of that.
  • I feel a blog post coming on that.
  • I preached on approval and our desire to be liked.
  • It was stretching and convicting at the same time as I realized last week I easily make my relationships about others getting my approval.
  • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  • Over the past week, Katie and I have been reading a book together that is so good. It’s John Ortberg’s new one: Soul Keeping: Caring For the Most Important Part of You.
  • Can’t recommend it enough.
  • I’m excited to be heading to Orlando later this week to speak at exponential.
  • I’m doing a breakout on how to transition a church with small groups to one with missional communities.
  • Should fun.
  • And humid.
  • Katie’s birthday is on Friday, so if you think of it, be sure to send her a birthday greeting.
  • I usually do a terrible job making her birthday special.
  • But not this year.
  • I have a lot planned for her (that is all a surprise).
  • Boom!
  • The downside for me is I’m not very good at keeping surprises from her.
  • Have to make it til Friday.
  • We had our newcomer’s lunch yesterday after church.
  • Blown away by how many people continue coming to Revolution.
  • We’ve had one every month this year and had over 20 people each time.
  • So cool.
  • I’d appreciate your prayers as we are pushing through a busy season as a church and a family.
  • We knew it ahead of time, but would still appreciate your prayers as we get closer to summer.
  • Time to finish my sermon for this Sunday and my exponential talk.
  • Here we go…

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

  • Having a hard time getting going this morning.
  • Most Monday’s feel like that, but Easter has a way of taking it out of you.
  • If you’re a pastor and struggling today, here are some ideas to help you.
  • Blown away by God’s grace to Revolution Church this weekend.
  • The Stations of the Cross on Friday were incredible.
  • Love exposing our church to a practice they haven’t done before.
  • I loved hearing from people who have done the stations with us before talk about how powerful they are doing them again.
  • Yesterday was incredible at Revolution.
  • We had 2 baptisms and 7 people take the step of beginning a relationship with Jesus.
  • That never gets old.
  • We had over 100 kids yesterday in Planet Rev.
  • Praying God’s timing speeds up so we can find a full-time kids director.
  • If you know of someone who would be a good fit or is interested in the position, let me know.
  • Loved hearing Davin and Derrell’s story as they got baptized.
  • Humbled by how God uses our church in the lives of people.
  • We kicked off our series on the book of Galatians yesterday.
  • I think the timing of this book will be incredibly helpful for our church as we continue to live in God’s grace.
  • It feels good to be back preaching through a book of the Bible.
  • That is definitely my favorite way of preaching.
  • If you missed yesterday, you can listen to it here.
  • Over the weekend, I started to read John Ortberg’s new book Soul Keeping
  • So good.
  • It reminds me of this fantastic book.
  • Both are much needed reading for pastors.
  • We have our kids homeschooling end of year celebration tonight.
  • Should be fun.
  • I told someone I met over the weekend that we homeschool and he asked, “You can have tattoos and do that?”
  • So funny.
  • One of the things that was cool to see yesterday was to see some people we had invited to church come.
  • Such a cool feeling.
  • You hope, you pray and then when they are there, you pray really hard that something hits them.
  • And that the preacher doesn’t say anything stupid.
  • I’ve been working through my book and I am about 50% done.
  • Excited to keep working on it and see what God has in store for it.
  • Last night Katie and I sat on the back porch talking about it and reminiscing of where we came from in the past 5 years.
  • Crazy to think where we are as a church now.
  • I have my next coaching appt. with Brian Howard today.
  • I can’t begin to describe how helpful this has been.
  • Time to get back to it…

Monday Morning Mind Dump… [Afternoon Edition]

mind dump

  • Just now getting this up.
  • I spent all day working on my computer as it decided to not work this morning.
  • Which now puts me about 7 hours behind schedule on Easter week.
  • Not cool.
  • As Katie and I often say, “I’m practicing sovereignty.”
  • Got to spend some extra time praying today and being reminded that God is in control of all this.
  • I continue to be overwhelmed by God’s grace to Revolution Church.
  • We continue to grow every week.
  • I looked out yesterday and thought, “Where did all these people come from?”
  • This week, we are going to put out every chair we have available.
  • Praying we run out.
  • Wrapped up our All In series yesterday and taught on the great commission and how Revolution does church.
  • I think most people want to know that their church has thought through why they do things.
  • Anyone who told me yesterday they don’t like something about Revolution, they followed by saying, “But it makes sense why we do what we do.”
  • I love talking about the vision of Revolution.
  • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  • Blown away by all the people praying for Revolution Church this week and for other churches in our city.
  • Praying that it causes people to see their prayer lives go to new levels.
  • After so many weeks doing topical sermons, I’m so excited to kick off our series on Galatians on Sunday.
  • Expository preaching definitely is our bread and butter.
  • We’re also celebrating baptisms on Sunday.
  • Not to late to sign up if you want to take that step (you can do so here).
  • Spent the weekend reading the new book Mission Drift: The Unspoken Crisis Facing Leaders, Charities, and Churches.
  • So many great things for pastors to think through and how to protect their church from drifting.
  • Yesterday was Judah’s birthday.
  • Hard to believe we only celebrated his first birthday with us.
  • It was super fun and he was totally overwhelmed.
  • Hope he felt our love in it.
  • I’m also going to write his birthday letter this week.
  • Lots of emotions in that.
  • If you haven’t made plans yet, make plans to join us at Revolution on Good Friday for The Stations of the Cross.
  • It is powerful.
  • We’re doing a Seder this Thursday with our MC.
  • Expecting to be stretched as an MC.
  • I haven’t done one since I was in Jerusalem 14 years ago.
  • Also excited to go see Captain America this week with the guys from my MC.
  • Definitely needed this week.
  • I’m behind, so back to it…

Monday Morning Mind Dump…

mind dump

  • The season that Revolution Church is in and the season that I am in personally is one of those seasons that you hope for.
  • Yesterday, Katie and I celebrated 12 years of marriage.
  • Hard to believe it’s been 12 years already.
  • It was fun reminiscing about life with her.
  • Really excited for our anniversary date day tomorrow.
  • Got lots of fun things planned.
  • We had almost 300 people yesterday @ Revolution for the 3rd week in a row.
  • Love seeing all the guests and people taking next steps.
  • Praying that we break 400 on Easter.
  • Speaking of Easter, I am so excited about the people taking the next step of getting baptized on Easter.
  • If that’s a next step you’d like to take, go here.
  • Yesterday’s sermon felt like more of a soapbox sermon for me.
  • I unpacked what Revolution Church believes about the gospel and how to share the gospel.
  • With all the talk about being “gospel centered” or “talking about the gospel enough” or “correctly” I think it’s important to define what that means.
  • Those terms while nice aren’t very helpful.
  • If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  • I challenged our church to pray 30 minutes each day between Palm Sunday and Easter and we had 75 people take the challenge.
  • That’s 259 hours of people praying.
  • So excited to see how God will work through that.
  • I’m hoping to have an exciting announcement about my book in the next week.
  • Stay tuned for that!
  • Taking my boys to the air show next Saturday with some guys from our MC.
  • Excited to take it all in with them.
  • They are going to be blown away.
  • I’ve been making some changes to my schedule and the people at Revolution that I spend my time with so that I’m intentionally developing leaders.
  • Love the fruit that has come from that so far.
  • I’m afraid too many pastors let their schedule happen to them instead of the other way around. I know I did for years.
  • Working on my talk for exponential this week. If you’d like to give some input on it, go here.
  • I’m excited about spending a few days with Mike DeAlto in Orlando.
  • I’ve been working the last few weeks on my Easter sermon and getting ready for our next series on the book of Galatians.
  • I think it is going to be an eye opening series for our church as we talk about grace, law, legalism, moralism and how being a good person isn’t enough to make you right with God.
  • Time to get back to it…
