Katie and I watched Dan in Real Life the other night. We are big fans of the The Office, so we are huge fans of Steve Carell who plays Dan. He was great in the movie. Dan is one of those self-help writers that you find in newspapers much like Dear Abby, but his personal life is falling apart. His kids don’t like him very much, he just lost his wife to cancer 2 years before and he has not recovered from that.
One of the things about the movie that got me thinking was in talking about making plans. I am a planner and this struck me, it is impossible to plan out our lives, no matter how hard we try. We can do our best to plan out each day and even the next year, but who knows what will happen in the morning or next month for that matter. It creates an anxiety as well as an excitement. It can make us look at each day with an onimous black cloud over it, or can cause us to see the beauty of a day full of unexpected surprises.
Definitely worth checking out, but have some tissues nearby. I found myself relating to Dan a lot as he wanted to control everything in his life, but everything was out of his control.
It also has a great soundtrack, one of the best I have heard in a long time.
