Sunday I did one of my favorite things: Daddy date.
One of the things I learned while working with students is that how kids end up, their Dads play a huge role in that. Now, I am not saying that Moms don’t play a large role, because they do (and that would be a stupid statement). As Katie and I worked with students though, we were able to look at teenage guys and girls and see within a few minutes what kind of relationship they had with their Dads. Girls will allow guy to treat them the way their Dad treated them. Guys will treat girls the way their Dad treated their Mom or daughters.
From the moment that Ava was born I made a promise to her that I would do everything in my power to make sure she grew up knowing she was loved and treasured. I made it my life mission to beat that poser with a mohawk, tattoo and mustang. I have a head start and I will crush him!
Anyway…
One thing I started when Ava was old enough was Daddy dates. Every month, Ava gets dressed up in her favorite dress and I take her out. She usually wants to go and get ice cream. It is funny the looks that I get from people. Now that Gavin is old enough, I started doing it with him.
Sunday, Katie had something going on, so we did a Daddy date for everyone with a little thing we call “Donut Sunday.” Essentially, we get donuts and it’s Sunday, hence the name.
Dads, if you have kids and don’t do this. Start. It will pay huge dividends in the future in your relationship with them.
