Just got my syllabus the other day for my next class. Crazy, I just sent in the homework for my last class a week ago, but it keeps right on moving.
For those of you new to this blog, I am working on my D.Min. in Advanced Missional Leadership at Biblical Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. I go there twice a year, in September (a great time to visit PA) and March (a horrendously bad time to visit PA). I grew up an hour west of Philly, so it’s always nice to go back, but I prefer the warm weather.
I’m really excited about this next class because one of my biggest interests is leadership. This class will walk through, what does leadership in a missional church look like? How is it different from a seeker-sensitive church? What spiritual practices should a leader engage in? What does teamwork look like? How do you develop the inner life of a leader? I’m really excited about it.
Here are the books I need to read and write a paper on each one:
Leadership Next: Changing Leaders in a Changing Culture (Eddie Gibbs)
Leadership without Easy Answers (Ronald Heifetz)
Emotional Intelligence (Daniel Goleman)
The Missional Leader: Equipping Your Church to Reach a Changing World (Alan Roxburgh)
Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership (Ruth Haley Barton)
Water from a Deep Well (Gerald Lawson Sittser)
Off-Road Disciplines: Spiritual Adventures of Missional Leaders (Earl Creps)
And then I have a list of books I need to pick 2 from. I’ll be posting reviews of each of these, so stay tuned.
In case you’re wondering, this is only 60% of the homework for this next class. But I’m excited about it and grateful for the opportunity.

Hello,
I am interested in some highlights of what you learned from Heifetz about leadership. Care to share?
Tim,
Here are my thoughts on the book: http://missionalthoughts.wordpress.com/2009/02/28/leadership-without-easy-answers/. While the book was good, I didn’t find it as great as some of my classmates did. It was one of the class favorites, but for me, and maybe it was where I am, but it didn’t hit me in the way it did others, but I think it is definitely worth checking out.
